In Anne Arundel’s first successful binding arbitration, the Police Supervisors Association secured a 3 percent across-the-board pay raise, County Executive John Leopold announced Monday.

“I am pleased that this first county experiment with binding arbitration has been successfully concluded with both the taxpayer and police sergeants arriving at a decision that is fair to both,” Leopold said in a statement.

The increase will go into effect July 7 and be followed by an additional 3 percent in July 2008, said Personnel Officer Andrea Fulton, who was involved in the negotiations.

Police sergeants also will be eligible for a 5 percent merit increase during both years, Fulton said.

A total of 74 authorized police sergeant positions make up the Police Supervisors Association. It is the first of 10 unions to request binding arbitration.

Seven successfully negotiated without it, and the two remaining groups — the deputy sheriff’s sergeants and the deputy sheriffs — are still in various stages of negotiation with Anne Arundel, officials said.
