“Some employees will be eligible and some not, depending on job title and seniority,” said Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild President M. William Salganik, who attended the Tuesday buyout meeting with The Sun management. Salganik estimated that only about 85 of the approximately 1,500-employee company would qualify.
The deal, according to Salganik, amounts to a week’s pay for every six months of service, up to one year — with June 1 as the last work day.
“Voluntary buyouts are certainly better than involuntary layoffs,” said Salganik, who as a business reporter, does not qualify. “I don't see how this helps us in the long run.”
