Anne Arundel County (Map, News) - Calling all artists — or at least the ones who live in Anne Arundel County or work for the county.

The county is looking for a logo, a symbol that will “represent the quality of life experienced here, while promoting the benefits of living and working” in the county, according to a news release.

“We want to have a unified brand for Anne Arundel County … something that rivals the Nike swoosh or Target’s bull’s-eye,” said Kathy Ricketson, a personnel analyst for the county. “When people see it, we want them to know it stands for Anne Arundel County.”

It’s a cause particularly near and dear to County Executive John Leopold, “an artist in his own right,” the news release says.

“I have done abstract expressionist oil painting,” Leopold said, recalling with a laugh a painting of a flower arrangement he once did, which he later traded to a clothing store for a three-piece suit.

The logo contest is open to both amateurs and professionals, but applicants must be enrolled in a school in the county, live in the county or work for the county government.

“It’s a way to get our young minds to be creative,” Leopold said. “I’m sure there will be some fascinating entries.”

Ricketson said one of the reasons the county wants to develop the logo is for recruitment purposes. “The baby boomers are retiring, and the work force is going to be shrinking,” she said.

Submissions will be judged on overall appearance, simplicity, clarity of message and originality, and must be bold enough to reproduce on formats of all sizes. The logo also must have as much impact in black and white as color.

All entries must be received by 5 p.m. May 31.

Examiner Reader said:
Reisterstown is pretty much in central Maryland, but we are not served by the YMCA of Central Maryland. Families have moved north and west of the city over the years increasing the population of this area and Owings Mills. The Jewish Community Center in Owings Mills is the only non-profit that provides services like the YMCA. Towson, Cationsville, have YMCA's, but we don't have one in the Reisterstown area.
