The 125 bricks of cocaine were hidden inside three duffel bags that were among a shipment of 1,080 cartons of plantains, officials said.
A drug-sniffing dog identified the cocaine during a sweep of the cargo on the Alianca Shanghai upon its arrival at the port.
“This cocaine seizure reflects the effectiveness of our officers to detect narcotics in the containerized cargo environment,” Michael Hrinyak, the port director. “We are determined to catch smugglers and the narcotics they attempt to ship hidden in legitimate merchandise.”
The cocaine was found inside a refrigerated container that originated in Ecuador and was destined for the Port of New York, authorities said. No arrests have been made in the case.
