Kurtz said there are many reasons for wanting to put off filing — or forgetting — and you can usually postpone it for six months beyond April 17.

Estimate your total tax liability for 2006, subtract what you've already paid in withholding or estimated payments and remit most or all of the balance.

Next, file an extension request form by April 17, electronically, by phone or mail.

“One more quirk,” Kurtz said. “If you live and work outside the United States, you may qualify for an automatic two-month extension of time to file without having to send in a form.”
