Westervelt’s goal was his third of the game and 21st of the season. The win pushes UMBC’s record to 7-4 and 2-1 in America East, while Binghamton is 3-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play. UMBC had led 10-4 going into the fourth quarter, but Binghamton ran off six straight goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation to force overtime. Binghamton’s Steve Carlson led all scorers with five goals in the game, which was played in very wet and sloppy conditions. The Retrievers host Vermont Saturday in the team’s regular-season home finale.
TIGERS FALL AT HOME: Hofstra’s Ryan Miller scored the game-winner in overtime as the Pride edged Towson, 9-8, Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 1,970.
The 14th ranked Tigers, who had won two straight prior to the game, held the lead going into the fourth quarter, but Hofstra scored the last three goals of the game to seal the win. Two of Hofstra’s final three goals came in the last minute of regulation. The third came when Miller took a pass from Mike Unterstein and scored with less than two minutes left in the first overtime. Miller scored twice, while his teammate Tom Dooley led all scorers with four goals. The loss drops Towson to 7-4 and 4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Meanwhile, Hofstra is 5-5 and 3-2 in the CAA.
Bobby Griebe led the Tigers in scoring against Hofstra with a hat trick, giving him 16 goals this season. Towson’s next game is at 7 p.m. this Saturday when it plays at Drexel in Philadelphia.
