Article History SILVER SPRING, Md. (Map, News) - A 2-year-old Silver Spring boy was abducted by his mother’s boyfriend Thursday, a situation that ended rather quickly when the kidnapper turned himself in after an Amber Alert was issued, according to authorities.
Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Melanie Hadley said that, as of Thursday afternoon, kidnapping charges were pending against Anderes J. Martinez, 28, the man who reportedly made off with his girlfriend’s son earlier in the day.
The boy was identified as Jimmy Junior Valderrama. Hadley said Martinez had taken care of Jimmy at the 28-year-old’s home on the 14000 block of Pear Tree Lane.
At about 4:30 a.m. the child’s mother apparently went to pick up her son, only to find that the two were gone.
By 8:25 a.m., Montgomery County Police issued an Amber Alert.
Hadley said Martinez called officials within an hour and by 9:15 a.m. had turned himself in and returned the boy unharmed.
“He didn’t seem to realize the extent of what he had done,” the spokeswoman said.
Although kidnappings are not especially common in Montgomery County, police issued an Amber Alert on the first of this year when police found 42-year-old Burtonsville woman, Chidiebere Omenihu Ochulo, dead inside her home and could not locate her three children or her estranged husband.
Police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer said an Amber Alert was issued for the offspring, aged 4, 6 and 8.
Eventually, a citizen spotted the father’s car, which led to police finding the children and charging Kelechi Charles Emeruwa in connection with Ochulo’s killing.
“We do believe that Amber Alerts can be effective in finding children,” Bauer said.
