BALTIMORE (Map, News) - J.B. is dead. The 18-year-old lioness, a mainstay at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, was euthanized this past weekend after veterinarians diagnosed her with severe liver disease.
"Our veterinary staff did everything they could to care for J.B., but unfortunately she did not respond to the treatment,” said Rebecca Gullott, the zoo’s mammal collection and conservation manager. “She will be deeply missed by zoo staff and guests.”
J.B. underwent exploratory surgery Friday after zoo staff noticed she wasn't doing well. The surgery confirmed liver disease, a common ailment in older meat-eaters, the zoo said in a statement.
The zoo has one other lion, a 14-year-old male named Tsavo.
