After a few hours of nonstop voting and little discussion Saturday, a move to change the limits on political campaign contributions got some members of the House of Delegates talking.

The bill (H.B. 560) proposed increasing the cap on campaign contributions to all statewide races during a four-year election cycle from $10,000 to $20,000. The $4,000 contribution limit to individual campaigns was not affected.

Del. Jon Cardin, D-Baltimore County, said the overall limit had not changed since 1991, and said the increase would “give everyone who wishes to partake” in the political process more opportunity.

Del. Luiz Simmons, D-Montgomery, argued that increasing the limit could “further tip the balance” toward large corporations and businesses that have already endured criticism for their influence over campaigns.
