The Giants will collect solar energy for San Francisco at AT&T park.
SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - The San Francisco Giants have been energizing The City since 1958, but soon, the team will be providing a whole different kind of power.

On Wednesday, the Giants and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. will announce a partnership to install 590 solar panels around AT&T Park to generate 123 kilowatts of power for the San Francisco power grid.

“Our goal is to work with PG&E to help with the use of renewable energy sources and showcase it to our fans,” Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter said.

Although the Giants will be hosting the solar panels and working with PG&E for ongoing promotions, the park will not use one watt of power collected, because the Giants purchase their power from an outside provider. If they did use the energy, it would be enough to power their new high-definition scoreboard screen for the year, according to Keely Wachs, PG&E’s environmental communications manager.

And while that means the Giants won’t see any direct benefit from the power, The City will be able to take full advantage of all the energy collected.
