Timothy Ryan, a 25-year journeyman of the publishing business and five-year former executive with The Baltimore Sun, has been named the paper’s new publisher and chief executive officer following the resignation Monday of Rondra Matthews, who held the post for six months.

Ryan previously worked as The Sun’s vice president of operations and circulation from 2000 to 2005. He has held posts with The Philadelphia Inquirer and most recently was the vice president of circulation and consumer marketing for The Chicago Tribune.

The Sun announced that Matthews resigned in order to care for her mother, who lives in Virginia.
