SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Want to watch the NCAA® Division I Men's Basketball Championship online without waiting in line? Here's the secret. Sign up for a VIP pass.
The passes, which are available on the NCAA web site, are are sort of virtual crowd control.
CBS doubled the bandwidth for viewing NCAA tournament games this year, but the room isn't unlimited. When the total number watching at one time nears the maximum — 300,000 — everyone else will have to sit in a virtual waiting room until somebody leaves.
There is a way to virtually cut in line, though.
Fans who are pre-registered as VIP members have special status and will be moved more quickly toward the front of the line. Getting VIP status is free, but limited. More than half of VIP openings have already been filled and demand is certain to increase rapidly as the tournament progresses.
