The father of a Yale student whose jaw was broken in a New Year’s Eve melee met with San Francisco police Chief Heather Fong, as a suspect in the attack on the university’s Baker’s Dozen a cappella group appeared in court.

Sharyar Aziz, the father of Sharyar Aziz Jr., met with Fong on Thursday, his lawyer Jim Hammer said. Hammer did not elaborate on the meeting, but said “he and his family are extremely thankful” for the work police have done. The Aziz family was initially critical of the police, saying they took too long to question the victims in the attack.

No charges have yet been filed in the attack on Aziz, which came as part of an alleged group assault against the Yale University a cappella group after a New Year’s Eve party in their honor. Several members of the singing group were injured in the attack, but Aziz’s injuries were the most severe.

Sharyar Aziz Sr. was in the courtroom when Richard Aicardi, 19, pleaded not guilty Thursday. Aicardi faces two counts of assault and battery for allegedly punching and kicking Yale students Evan Gogel and William Bailey. Gogel suffered a concussion in the melee.

Judge Donna Alyson Little agreed to a request by Aicardi’s lawyer Frank Passaglia to continue the arraignment until April 9, when Aicardi’s co-defendant, Brian Dwyer, 19, will appear. Dwyer surrendered himself to Millbrae police Tuesday. He faces one count of assault and battery for allegedly attacking Gogel.

Hammer said Sharyar Aziz Sr. hoped to meet with District Attorney Kamala Harris on Thursday or today. Hammer criticized Harris for not prosecuting the case aggressively enough, saying, “There’s more than enough evidence, if you wanted to be aggressive about it, to go after everybody.”

As for Sharyar Aziz Sr.’s appearance in San Francisco, Hammer said, “He, like any parent, is a father who wants to see justice for his kid. Imagine the call the night your kid gets his jaw broken. He’s just a parent, that’s all this is about.”
