SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A 19-year-old man who was shot in the head Saturday afternoon in The City’s Western Addition remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was walking through a playground near Grove and Buchanan streets shortly after noon when he was shot, San Francisco police Officer Terrye Ivy said.

Paramedics rushed the man to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Ivy said.

The San Francisco Police Department increased its presence in the Western Addition last month, following a spike in violence that included the shooting of a 13-year-old girl.

That victim survived her shooting.

At a recent community meeting with police, Western Addition residents expressed concern about the heavy violence.

This year to date, there have been five homicides and 197 aggravated assaults in the Park and Northern police districts, which both serve the Western Addition area, according to the San Francisco Police Department’s CrimeMAPS Web site.

Some community members suggested a gang injunction like the one implemented in the Bayview district in October.

Police have said many of the recent shootings in the area have been gang-related.

One problem is that the police are not allowed to do their job. They have their hands tied. These people need to start taking care of themselves and thier children. We've been providing "assistance" for so long, they've become so dependent on a system in which they also blame for their own problems and bad decision making. Why is you child hanging out in the middle of the day? Don't they go to school? If not most of these guys could get a job. I've seen with my own eyes. Car break ins. Drugs. stupidity. In broad daylight. They just don't give a damn. It's as if they just accept the lie that "it's just the way it is in the hood". Nutin we can do about it. Bull.
