Police say a dead body that was discovered in a Page Street flat has not officially been ruled a homicide.
SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - San Francisco police have said the man who was found dead in a Haight-Ashbury district apartment early Monday morning was naked and handcuffed — details that put a darker spin on an already strange case.
Police Sgt. Neville Gittens said Tuesday the case has not officially been ruled a homicide. But the case’s lead officers are homicide inspectors.
Gittens said the officers are waiting for the Chief San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the body and disclose a cause of death before making an official call.
“It will still remain a suspicious death until that cause and determination can be made,” Gittens added.
A dispatcher with the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office said the exam would be finished today.
After a two-week vacation, Dennis Oliver returned to his apartment on the 1900 block of Page Street to a grim discovery. His apartment had been ransacked, and there was a dead body lying on his bedroom floor.
Although he didn’t see the man’s face, Oliver told police it could be his cat sitter, who had access to his apartment while he was away.
Law enforcement officials have not released any additional information on the case. Gittens said it remains unclear whether the apartment was broken into or if anything was stolen.
