A San Mateo Superior Court judge will consider today whether to postpone the trial of a teenager accused of causing the vehicle crash that killed two Tongan royals.

Edith Delgado, 18, was scheduled to begin her trial Tuesday, but Deputy District Attorney Aaron Fitzgerald made a last-minute motion Thursday asking for more time after Delgado’s attorney, Randy Moore, submitted an extensive witness list and additional information in the case, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Because Delgado and Moore have requested a speedy trial, proceedings must begin by April 16.

Delgado was allegedly behind the wheel of her white Ford Mustang driving northbound on U.S. Highway 101 in Menlo Park shortly after 9 p.m. on July 5, 2006, when her car clipped the corner of a red Ford Explorer, sending the SUV end-over-end. All three inside the Explorer, including Tongan Prince Tu’ipelehake, 56, Princess Kaimana, 46, and their driver, 35-year-old East Palo Alto resident Vinisia Hefa, were killed instantly.

Witnesses said Delgado was driving recklessly at speeds of up to 90 or 100 miles per hour, and was racing with a black Cadillac Escalade. To date, no charges have been filed against additional suspects in the crash, Fitzgerald said.

Delgado remains in jail on $1 million bail.
