Article History BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Morgan State men’s basketball coach Todd Bozeman is expected to return to Farmville, Va., this week to answer misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an alleged confrontation over a post-game meal order at a restaurant Saturday.
Prince Edward County (Va.) Commonwealth attorney Jim Ennis said he spoke with lawyers representing Bozeman and expects the coach to turn himself in soon.
Ennis said Bozeman is charged with assault and battery, a first-class misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $2,500 fine. Bozeman is also charged with curse and abuse, punishable by up to a $500 fine.
The incident happened at Mulligan’s restaurant, which is near the Longwood University campus, where Morgan State lost Saturday on a last-second shot, 75-73.
Mulligan’s manager Carlos Holland told The Examiner that Bozeman became enraged after Morgan State’s order of 52 cheesesteak or chicken sandwiches could not be filled and was replaced with cold ham and turkey sandwiches. Holland said at one point Bozeman grabbed restaurant employee Stephanie Shreck and pushed her out of the way.
“I come through the back door and saw Stephanie crying,” Holland said. “She had no idea what was going on, and he just came in yelling. She was startled and scared for her life. As I walked in the door, I just saw Mr. Bozeman yelling. I could not get a word in with this guy.”
Repeated attempts to reach Bozeman for comment were unsuccessful.
Morgan State spokesman Clint Coleman said the university is still sorting out the details of what happened. No decision regarding any disciplinary action against Bozeman has been made at this time.
“Our police department will be working with the Farmville police, and we will be speaking with Coach Bozeman to hopefully come up with an understanding of what happened,” Coleman said. “We believe what occurred was unfortunate and regret that this misunderstanding occurred. We are taking a wait-and-see approach before making any judgments.”
The incident overshadowed Morgan State’s most impressive win of the year, a 54-40 victory Monday over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference leader Delaware State (12-11, 9-2). The win was the Bears’ fifth straight in conference play and improved their record to 9-12, 7-3. It also snapped Delaware State’s 22-game home MEAC winning streak.

It's particularly unfair to say that Hurley was a nice college player but a marginal pro - he was in a gruesome accident that essentially destroyed his NBA career. What's next? Are you going to say Jay Williams was a disappointment?

I'm still scratching my head trying find any similarities between Kevin Love and Larry Bird. Love is a low post player who can hit an outside shot if he's left unguarded, Larry Bird was a great outside shooter who could penetrate. Love lumbers down the court like a Clydesdale, Bird could run like a quarter horse. Other than the fact that they're both white and both are good, they're as different as could be.

Also, USC playing better as the season progressed? As shown by their 6-4 record in the last 10 games? Or their 12-8 record over the past 20 games? Oh, wait, USC actually was most successful EARLY in the season.

Did Dickey even watch the Pac-10 finals? Only a little help from Love? I guess, if only offense counts. Of course, the real reason UCLA won the game is that Love totally shut down Brook Lopez in the second half.

How can you talk about a resurgence of college hoops in the area and not mention the only school from Baltimore to win a National Championship ad has the best chance to reach the NCAA Division I tourny this year: Morgan State University!! Is it because Morgan plays in the predominately Black college MEAC. or have you become conditioned to disregard any accomlishments by this great university, just like the rest of the sports journalist in this city?

Joe Mclean is like a breath of fresh air, especially in a time when the very life we live seems to be suffocating from the nonsensical stinch that's presently being emitted from a misguided generation of African/american youth that somehow seems insurmountable and even far too complex for the creator Himself to resolve. Joe is one of the most well rounded young brothers I know. He's a possitve role model and a gift to any parent. That's why I'm overwhelmed at the very fact of his existance and forever grateful to my Lord for allowing me to be his POP-POP. Thanks Joe, keep up the good work.
