SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Casa Niños, a Hillsborough mansion designed by historic architect Clarence Tantau, is being sold shortly after a recent sale and renovation.

Tantau worked locally for nearly 30 years at the beginning of the 1900s, according to the Environmental Design Archives of the University of California at Berkeley. He designed homes in Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula.

“Tantau is best known for his Spanish style architecture, which he employed frequently in both residential and commercial designs. He was a member of the Northern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the State Association of California Architects,” reads a statement on the archive’s Web site.

Casa Niños was built for a family in the 1920s, Cashin Co. Realtor Pierre Buljan said. The house was laid out in a classic U-shape surrounding a courtyard. It included expensive details, from antique Venetian columns to Saltillo tiles, 18th-century ironwork balustrades and 17th-century carriage doors.

It also includes a very swell entertaining space, a two-story ballroom with a stairway that leads to an orchestra balcony.

“It’s really in an old-fashioned style, when all those robber barons were building those grand, grand homes on the Peninsula,” Buljan said.

It was recently extensively renovated.

“All the baths were redone,” Buljan said. “All the inside was refreshed with Venetian plaster throughout. They’ve gone through the entire kitchen with new appliances. The countertops were done recently before that, and they did the cabinets to match the style of the house … whitewashed to brighten up the kitchen.”
