A male teenager and Montgomery County Police officer were both shot during an undercover narcotics investigation in Burtonsville that went terribly wrong, according to authorities.

Lt. Eric Burnett, a police spokesman, said the teenage suspect was in critical condition at a local hospital after being shot in the torso, while the officer reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the shoulder area.

The shootout occurred just after 2 p.m. at a Metro Park & Ride at the corner of Greencastle Road and Turnbridge Drive.

Burnett would not elaborate on the nature of the drug investigation, except to say that one male teenager has been arrested.

It was not known Friday evening who fired first or how many shots were fired, but Burnett said both the officer and suspect fired their guns during the incident.

“We’ve recovered evidence that gives us a good idea of what happened,” he said.

The internal affairs division of the police department will investigate the incident, as is required whenever there is an officer-involved shooting, according to Burnett.

As of press time Friday, the names of the suspects and officer were not yet released.
