Baltimore County health workers invite seniors to assess their driving skills.

By the year 2020, more than 15 percent of all drivers will be over age 65, according to the Baltimore County Department of Aging. The National Institute of Aging reports drivers 65 and over are the second-most likely to die in a car crash.

To address this issue, the Baltimore County Department of Aging has joined with St. Joseph’s Medical Center to offer free seminars to help seniors assess their driving in the department’s 19 senior centers.

“The purpose of the seminar is to educate seniors and increase their awareness,” said Melissa Skidmore, of the Department of Aging.

Testing the sensory capabilities of the seniors and making sure they are not using alcohol or medication that may make them drowsy are topics that will be addressed, Skidmore said.

Overall, participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of driving impairment and how to adjust their habits if these signs exist.
