BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Put yourself in an art curator’s shoes — literally.
The Maryland Art Place is now accepting proposals for its annual guest curator competition.
Housed downtown in Power Plant Live!, Maryland Art Place’s fifth annual Curators’ Incubator Program is designed to bring diversity and fresh perspective to art produced locally.
“We look for new and emerging curators,” said executive director Julie Ann Cavnor.
“Individuals with little or no previous curatorial experience are encouraged to apply,” she said.
The gallery is comprised of three main rooms, sometimes used as three separate galleries.
There could be one to three different winners, depending on the sizes of the proposed exhibits.
In 2006, Fabian Goncalves Borrega and the team of Jeffreen Hayes and Bennie Johnson were given the opportunity to display their interpretations.
“It was a wonderful experience,” said Borrega, whose exhibit highlighted cultural objects through photography. Borrega said his experience continues to open doors for him — he received another curatorial opportunity and his opinion is now held in higher regard.
“You need to be ready to answer a lot of questions from various points of view,” he said. “You have to be able to justify whatever you present.”
Those applicants who pass to the second phase of the application process will receive guidance from reviewers.
This program, like many Maryland Art Place educational offerings, allows staff and members of its Program Advisory Committee an opportunity to do something that the organization has become known for: willingness to mentor.
The successful candidates will present their exhibits for four weeks next fall and have their curatorial writings published in a catalogue.
