BALTIMORE (Map, News) - While the spirit of giving is alive and well during the holiday shopping season, so is the spirit of taking.

“In past seasons, some retail customers have been trampled, tread upon and thumped while searching for a bargain on Black Friday,” said John B. Townsend II, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Don’t get stampeded and don’t get into fisticuffs over stuff. It isn’t worth it. Plus, he said, “don’t become an easy mark for purse snatchers and pickpockets.”

» Shop with a friend. “There’s strength in numbers, and you are much safer when you take a friend who shares your zeal for bargains to ride shotgun and to watch your back,” Townsend said.

» Don’t carry a shoulder bag over your shoulder. This makes it easier for a thief to grab your bag, knock you down and injure you.

» Don’t leave your purse on the counter while paying for an item.

» Carry mace or a whistle for extra protection.

» Keep all valuables out of sight in your car, preferably locked in the trunk.

» Park in well-lit areas at night.

» When returning to your car, have you keys in hand and check the car’s interior before opening the door.

» If you use an ATM for cash withdrawals, choose one that is located inside a mall or in a well-lit location.
