Metro officials announced that for the entire month of December, there will be none of the scheduled track maintenance that has been delaying riders anywhere from 10 minutes to more than 30 minutes each weekend since the Cherry Blossom Festival last spring.

Customers will be able “to travel on the weekends without checking the Web site” for delays, said Steven Taubenkibel, a Metro spokesman.

The crews that have worked each weekend are getting the time off for the holidays, he said.

The only single-track operations through December will occur on the Green Line between Greenbelt and College Park. From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Metro has tested and will continue to test the new 6000 series railcars, Taubenkibel said.

“We know that track work on the weekends can be an inconvenience; however this work is necessary to ensure the safe operation of the Metrorail system now and into the future,” Steven Feil, Metro’s chief operating officer for Metrorail, said in a statement.
