Maryland hunters killed 50 percent more turkeys this year than last year, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. They bagged 205 during the turkey-hunting season from Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 this year, compared to 137 last year, said a DNR news release. Allegany and Garrett counties had the highest harvests, with 80 turkeys each, DNR said, followed by Washington County, with 45.

Turkey-hunting in Maryland is allowed only in those three counties during the one-week season. Also, hunters are allowed to kill only one each. DNR said the increase this year likely resulted from favorable weather during the season and above-average reproduction among the turkeys last summer. The number of deer killed during the early bow, crossbow and muzzleloader season in September and October was up less than 1.5 percemt this year, from 23,114 to 23,428.
