BALTIMORE (Map, News) - The Navy women’s soccer team’s record-breaking season came to an end Sunday in the second round of the NCAA tournament, as host North Carolina, the top seed, blanked the Midshipmen, 4-0.

Goalie Lizzie Barnes made 10 saves for the Midshipmen (21-1-2) against the Tar Heels, who had 15 shots on goal.

Whitney Engen had two goals while Elizabeth Guess and Melissa Hayes scored for North Carolina, which improved to 23-1 on the season.

The four goals are the most scored against the Navy since last year’s season finale when nationally ranked Penn State blanked the Midshipmen, 5-0.

JHU MEN REACH SWEET 16: The Johns Hopkins men rode another solid game from freshman Max Venker to topple Christopher Newport, 3-1, at Homewood Field Saturday night in NCAA Division III tournament action. Venker scored a pair of goals to put the game away after classmate Tommy McQueen converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Hopkins (18-1-2) is set to play Western New England, which beat Amherst Sunday, in the round of 16.

JHU WOMEN WIN IN DOUBLE OT: Johns Hopkins senior Jessie McKenzie struck a perfect corner kick with 1:30 remaining in double overtime Saturday night, sending the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 win over Salisbury in first-round action at Christopher Newport (Va.).

The win marked the first NCAA Division III tournament win for Hopkins in program history.

The Blue Jays (18-2) scored their first goal on a corner kick, as well, with senior Nikkole Haines’ ball finding classmate Laurie Baumann, who headed it home for a 1-0 lead. Hopkins held Salisbury without a shot for the entire first half.

The Hopkins women faced Virginia Wesleyan in the second round Sunday evening. The game ended too late to be included in this edition.

MUSTANG WOMEN STAMPEDED: The Villa Julie women made the trek up to The College of New Jersey soccer complex Sunday and were turned around by the TCNJ women’s team, 10-1, in first-round action in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Mustangs (15-8) ruined a shutout on Tonia Cristino’s team-best 16th goal of the season.

TERPS, TIGERS READY: In Division I men’s action, Maryland (15-4-1) hosts St. John’s (14-5-2) Wednesday at 7 p.m., while Towson (14-1-3) will play Fairfield (15-5-1) Wednesday at a time and location yet to be determined.

Re Munoz: I believe he is injured (hamstring) and was not at training when the reporter showed up. Good to see Chucky represented though!
