Work on adding through and turn lanes to a state route that parallels the Beltway in Upper Marlboro will begin next week, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration.

Construction focuses on where Maryland 202 intersects with Campus Way North and Campus Way South, at the northeastern end of the Prince George’s Community College campus.

The work will add a single, through northbound lane to Maryland 202, which goes on to intersect Maryland 214 and the Beltway within the next five miles.

Southbound Maryland 202 will get an additional lane for traffic turning onto westbound Campus Way South.

The highway administration said the intersection experiences “severe congestion” during peak hours of the day. About 42,000 vehicles travel that stretch of road each day, according to the highway administration.

The project will cost $1.5 million and construction is expected to last until spring 2007. Workers will close single lanes along Maryland 202 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The project is just one of several announced recently by the highway administration to help roads in Prince George’s County. About two weeks ago, the state released a list of intersections that will be widened or realigned to improve safety and the flow of traffic.
