Is the “Republican Revolution” over? Mount Vernon lawyer Andy Hurst thinks so.

Hurst, 36, is challenging veteran U.S. Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., in the race this fall. Many consider Hurst a long shot against the popular Davis.

But in an exclusive with The Examiner, Hurst tries to explain why he’s the right man for Davis’ job.

Why should someone vote for you for Congress?

Voters should elect me because our country is headed in the wrong direction, and we must change our leaders if we hope to change our direction. Tom Davis supports the Bush agenda 90 percent of the time. I’ll stand up to [President] George Bush and work to bring our troops home.

Why don’t you think Tom Davis has been a good Congress member?

He has been a staunch supporter of Bush’s “stay the course” strategy in Iraq and has consistently voted against our interests on education, health care and a host of other issues. He accepts millions of dollars from corrupt special interests and allows those dollars to influence his votes in Congress.

Democrats have been capitalizing on public anger against the Republicans, but what have they offered that’s affirmative — that is, a campaign plank other than “we’re not the GOP?”

I’ve offered a host of positive proposals that will move our country forward on issues like education, health care, and transportation.

Once in Congress, I will propose creating a new office — inspector general for Congress — which will monitor and investigate the actions of the Congress. I will work to institute nonpartisan redistricting commissions to end the partisan gerrymandering that corrupts our system. Furthermore, I’ll fight for a voluntary public financing plan for campaigns.

What is your favorite movie, book, CD and why?

One of my favorite movies is “An Inconvenient Truth” because it highlights an issue — global warming — that is critical to the health our planet.

My favorite book is the Bible. There is no book in my life that has so consistently challenged, inspired and moved me. Right now, I have the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” in my CD player.
