The Havre de Grace City Council voted 3-2 Monday to reschedule its popular Independence Day parade, in hopes of preventing another disturbance like the riot that marred this past year’s celebration.

In past years, the Fourth of July Carnival in Tydings Park has been capped by a parade through the city and a fireworks show on the Susquehanna River, but fights broke out in the crowd this year after the fireworks and escalated into a park-wide incident that required 60 police officers to subdue, officials said. The committee that puts on the event recommended that the parade be held on a separate night from the fireworks, so that perhaps the crowds would be thinner both nights and police could have more control.

“We’ll be implementing other recommendations, such as an increased police presence and a police command center at the park,” said Councilman Garrett Lyttle.
