Larry Vallerga Jr., the 43-year-old son of Colma Vice Mayor Fro Vallerga, was killed in a collision with a car on El Camino Real in unincorporated San Mateo County on Sunday.

Vallerga, a native of Colma, was single and lived in San Francisco, working as an adult mental health counselor for the City of San Francisco, the vice mayor said Monday.

She said he was on his way to Colma after church services Sunday.

“He was very devout. He was ready to go to God if anybody is,” Vallerga said through tears Monday.

Corp. Steve Rettinger of Broadmoor Police, which is handling the investigation into the incident, said that at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, a female automobile driver crossed the median on the 7600 block of El Camino Real, at A Street near the BART station, and struck Vallerga, who drove a scooter.

Vallerga died approximately an hour later at San Francisco General Hospital, said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucreault, most likely from injuries stemming from the accident.

Colma has postponed its Wednesday town council meetings until further notice, out of respect for the Vallergas.

“It’s awful when you lose a child no matter how old they are,” Mayor Helen Fisicaro said.
