Wilson Bridge officials are shutting down the ramp from the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway to Route 1 South in Alexandria on Monday to make room for contractors to complete a new interchange, officials said Friday.

The closure, expected to last four months, will force southbound drivers to share the same exit with northbound traffic. Despite the convergence, project spokeswoman Michelle Holland said a recent traffic analysis shows the change should have minor impact.

Southbound Route 1 drivers will have to turn right at the traffic light at the end of this ramp. Holland said the green-light duration will be extended to accommodate the increased traffic.

Virginia Department of Transportation officials also warn of a series of single and complete lane closures expected next week around the Springfield Interchange.

Beginning Monday morning, portions of the Inner and Outer loops of the Beltway will be closed between Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road to protect workers in the area, said project spokesman Steve Titunik. The shoulder and single lanes in each direction will be shut down beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The lanes are expected to be reopened by 3:30 p.m., in time for rush hours, Titunik said.

Single lanes and shoulders on Interstate 395 in both directions, and the HOV lanes between Franconia-Springfield Parkway and Edsall Road will also be closed during the same period. The southbound closures will be in place until 5 p.m.
