The Broward County Fair is ditching traditional rides and carnival food this year and relocating to a shopping plaza.

The economic downturn and the lack of permanent fairgrounds has forced organizers to downsize the event and move it to a 972,000-square-foot Pompano Beach shopping center. Despite the changes, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit board charged with organizing the fair says the event will still meet its top objective - showcasing the work of local students.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, this year's spelling be will be held near an optometry store and horticulture exhibits will be placed near a home improvement center. Student artwork will also be displayed.

The fair is scheduled to be held later this month.
