Opening statements are expected Thursday in the death-penalty trial of a man accused of killing a Philadelphia police officer two years ago.

Twenty-three-year-old John Lewis, who's nicknamed Jordan, is accused of shooting 54-year-old Officer Chuck Cassidy on Oct. 31, 2007. Police say the officer walked in on a robbery at a doughnut shop in the West Oak Lane section of North Philadelphia. The father of three died the next day.

Police say Lewis confessed after being arrested in a Miami homeless shelter a few days after the shooting. Earlier this month, he dropped a motion to suppress the alleged confession.
