A Las Vegas-area man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the stabbing death of his mother.

Garrick K. Brown entered the plea to the first-degree murder charge Tuesday in Clark County District Court.

It will be up to a judge at sentencing to determine whether Brown is mentally ill. Under the terms of the 28-year-old's plea deal, he likely will be sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 20 years.

In October 2008, police responded to a 911 call and found Brown's mother, 61-year-old Raymarie Brown, lying on a couch and dead of apparent cuts and stab wounds.
