A volunteer high school football coach has pleaded not guilty to shooting his pregnant lover during an argument in the Central Coast town of Paso Robles.

Steven Smith, 26, entered pleas Tuesday to two counts of attempted murder and a burglary charge. He remained jailed on $1 million bail.

San Luis Obispo County prosecutors claim Smith shot a 34-year-old woman in the forehead, chin and hand Friday at her Paso Robles home. The woman, who is 36 weeks pregnant, is expected to recover because the bullet did not penetrate the skull. Her baby was not harmed.

Authorities claim the couple had been fighting because Smith wanted to end the relationship.

School district officials say Smith was a volunteer assistant football coach at Paso Robles High School but he's been suspended.
