A 63-year-old man who was hiking on a popular Grand Canyon trail has died after he was found collapsed and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The National Park Service says Joseph Mitchell of Clarkdale, Ariz. had been hiking the Bright Angel Trail late Monday afternoon. Family members with him had hiked ahead and found him not breathing, unresponsive and bleeding from the head when they went back to find him.

A Park Service 911 operator gave instructions on CPR while Rangers went to the area. They took over resuscitation efforts but Mitchell was declared dead at the scene.

His body was airlifted from the canyon on Tuesday. An autopsy is scheduled.
