The Portland-Vancouver area ranks ninth in the nation in pedestrian safety.

The Oregonian reports U.S. Census Bureau figures for 52 metro areas list Portland high for the number of residents who walk to work and the relatively low number of pedestrian deaths.

Seattle ranks fifth-safest on the list.

News of the report, however, comes as Portland saw four pedestrians in accidents, one of them fatal, in the last week.
