A Virginia Tech center for student collaboration in a wing that was the site of mass shootings in 2007 has been named for an engineering professor who was slain.

The school's Board of Visitors on Monday approved the engineering faculty's proposal to name the room the Dr. Liviu Librescu (LIHV'-yoo lih-BRES'-koo) Student Engagement Center.

The center is one of six rooms in a renovated second-floor wing of Norris Hall, where student gunman Seung-Hui Cho (sung-wee joh) killed 30 people on April 16, 2007 and then took his own life. Two others were killed in a dormitory.

Engineering Science and Mechanics Department students have been meeting in the room to work on team projects.

Alumnus Pat Artis and his wife, Nancy, provided a gift to furnish the center.
