Berkeley officials are expected to make a decision Tuesday on the hiring of a new police chief.

The City Council is scheduled to consider whether to name Seattle police Capt. Michael Meehan as the new chief.

Meehan is a 23-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department, where he is the commander of the violent crimes division. He would come to Berkeley after being selected by a recruitment committee consisting of residents, city staff and police officers.

Meehan would head up a department of 185 officers, with a budget of $56.5 million.

As part of his compensation package, the 48-year-old Meehan would receive an annual salary of $205,000. He would also be provided with a $500,000 home loan from the city at 3 percent interest.

Meehan would replace Doug Hambleton, who retired in September.
