The success of a program that provides free admission or special discounts to metro Detroit cultural attractions has caused its most popular venue to opt out.

Public relations director Pamela Marcil tells the Detroit Free Press that the Detroit Institute of Arts will no longer participate in the Museum Adventure Pass program because it's costing the museum "badly needed revenue."

Marcil said during the past two years 49,246 people used the pass to visit the DIA, costing the museum about $295,000.

People obtain the two- to four-person admission passes at 174 libraries statewide by using their library card. Nearly 92,000 passes were checked out last year.

The Detroit Children's Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum and the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm also will not participate.
