Washoe District Judge Robert Perry sentenced Jorge Moreno to one to three years in prison but then suspended the term and ordered him to probation. Moreno also was ordered to pay $3,000 restitution.
Senior Deputy Attorney General Ronda Clifton said if Moreno violates his probation, he faces an eight-year prison term based on the fraud charge, along with an earlier conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.
The friend, Fabien Cedano, died of a head injury after he and Moreno jumped out of the vehicle before it crashed in July 2008.
Prosecutors said the two were acting at the request of Oscar Zavala-Gallegos, the owner of the 2002 Cadillac Escalade.
Zavala-Gallegos earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and also was sentenced to probation.
He said he could not afford its $620 monthly payments and owed more money than it was valued. He had arranged with Cedano and Moreno to stage a theft of the vehicle from the parking lot of the Meadowood Mall and crash it so he could get an insurance settlement.
For his role, Cedano was going to take the vehicle's video system.
