Police say the men were on or near the tracks when they were hit by a 7,000-foot-long freight in Fullerton shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The county coroner identifies them as 56-year-old Virgil Lamphier and his 23-year-old son David, both of Fullerton.
Police Sgt. Mike MacDonald says the men liked to go out and watch the trains at least once a week. He says the engineer blew the train horn to warn the men but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting them.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokeswoman Lena Kent says the train was doing about 50 mph and would have needed a mile to stop.
