Maryland's State Highway Administration has proposed improvements to Route 589 to upgrade the road before slots and development arrive.

With slots expected at Ocean Downs by Memorial Day 2010, SHA District Engineer Donnie Drewer said Racetrack Road, as Route 589 is known, needs upgrades. He proposed the changes to Worcester County Commissioners Tuesday.

Drewer said the improvements made by the "slots people will take care of all the traffic that slots will create."

For long-term solutions, he said Route 589 needs to be improved from Route 90 to Route 50 and maybe widening the road to six lanes at Route 50.
