A former television anchorwoman and reporter has been elected to the Islip (EYE'-slip) town board in New York.

Trish Bergin was the top vote-getter among four candidates seeking two open seats on the town council.

The former reporter for Cablevision-owned News 12 ran as an independent. But she also had ballot lines from the Republican and Conservative parties, and the "Tea Party" movement.

In addition to working for News12 Long Island, Bergin has been a reporter for WCBS-TV in New York, as well as the nationally syndicated "Inside Edition."

Supporters included her friend, Billy Joel. The "Piano Man" donated $2,350 to her campaign.
