The Prince George's County Council has approved a law to install speed cameras in 50 school zones.

The cameras will be installed over 18 months starting in January. There will be a 30-day grace period; then, drivers who are caught by the devices will be mailed a $40 fine. The tickets will not add points to a driver's license.

A new Maryland law permits counties and towns to install speed cameras near schools. A spokesman for County Executive Jack Johnson says the cameras will discourage speeding and allow police to focus on more serious crimes.
