When the 1947 single-engine French Air Force trainer biplane hit the ground too hard, the landing gear failed and the plane toppled over, 1st Sgt. Russ Newell said. The pilot, Paul Blackman, 71, of the 2500 block of Cornstalk Drive in Finksburg, and the passenger, Irvin Herling, 59, of the 21000 block of Slab Bridge Road in Freeland, were suspended upside-down in their safety harnesses, and Herling received an abrasion when his head struck the aircraft, according to police.
The pair took off from Carroll County Regional Airport for what was supposed to be a pleasure flight to visit George Makoutz Field on the 3700 block of Old Taneytown Road, Taneytown, police said.
