Council looks ahead past recess, elections

Montgomery County (Map, News) - With the Montgomery County Council scheduled to recess after today’s meeting until Sept. 18, which is six days after the primary election, county officials said it’s not clear what is left on the Council’s drawing board for the year.

But the primary could give voters an indication of what’s to come, said Council spokesman Patrick Lacefield.

“I’m not sure that it’s very clear right now,” Lacefield said. “What is on the agenda may even be altered by what happens in the primary.”

All but two members of the Council are up for re-election; those seven are now focusing on their campaigns. Council Member Tom Perez is running for state attorney general, and Council Member Steve Silverman is running for county executive.

With the election year in mind, the Council has taken up its most glaringly important agenda items for the year, Lacefield said.

But Council Member Nancy Floreen said she’s not done with her agenda yet.

“We’re going to be distracted in August, but then we’ll get back to business,” Floreen said Friday.

Floreen said she plans to introduce legislation today that would provide tax credits for green building construction. Legislation over draining requirements for new construction has been pending as well, she said.

“The second one has been in the works for a long time,” Floreen said.

Council President George Leventhal said has some small-ticket items planned for the future, including legislation over signage outside of religious organizations. He said there still are several environmental items before the Council, including legislation he introduced in April over the construction rules of environmentally friendly, or “green,” buildings.
