Mike Celenza, Quince Orchard
senior, pitcher/first baseman
Led Cougars (21-1) to division and region titles, as well as their third appearance in the state semifinals in the last four years. Left-handed slugger batted .533 with seven home runs and 43 RBI. As a right-handed pitcher, Celenza went 6-0 with two saves and a 0.69 ERA. Had a win in the region semifinals and a save in the finals. As a junior, had the game-winning hit in the state championship game victory over Arundel. Will play at Salisbury.
Coach of the Year
John McGowan, Good Counsel
Guided Falcons (14-13-1) to their first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title in 16 years despite the loss of their top pitcher, Christian Schultz, to an injury. Falcons did it with a patchwork staff and potent offense that hit .374 and in three WCAC Tournament victories, amassed 35 runs and 45 hits. McGowan, grandson of Hall of Fame umpire, Bill McGowan, has coached two seasons at Good Counsel.
First team
Sean Swetnam
Eleanor Roosevelt, junior, pitcher
Right-hander went 8-1 with a 0.78 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 54 innings. Lone loss came in state semifinals. Led ER (22-1) to Prince George’s County and South Region titles. Hit .362 with three home runs and team-high 33 RBI.
Andy Moldawer
Quince Orchard, senior, pitcher
In a starting role for the first time in his career, the 6-foot right-hander came up big for the Cougars, going 8-0 with a 1.75 ERA, helping QO to a perfect regular season. Will play at Catholic University.
Nick Pearce
DeMatha, senior, pitcher
Preseason all-state choice lived up to his billing. The 6-foot-5 right-hander went 6-2 with two saves and a 1.89 ERA. In 56 innings, Pearce fanned 59 and walked 18. Will play at Maryland.
Zach Tarner
Blake, senior, pitcher
Went 7-1 with a 2.32 ERA, leading the Bengals to the 4A North Region title game. Tarner also hit .455, slugged .891, ripped five home runs and had 12 RBI. Will play college baseball at Hartford.
Chris Berset
The Heights, senior, catcher
Outstanding defensive catcher threw out 21 runners stealing this season. Hit .571 with 15 doubles, two home runs and 26 runs batted in. Has signed with Michigan.
Steve Ulaky
Good Counsel, senior, first baseman
Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year hit .529 with two home runs, 18 doubles and team-high 42 runs batted in. The 6-4 lefty also went 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA and 46 strikeouts. Will play at Delaware.
Devin Rivers
DeMatha, senior, second baseman
Hit .419 with six doubles, six triples, four home runs and 36 RBI, leading DeMatha to a 24-7 season. Named first-team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Will play at Lamar (La.).
Matt Campbell
DeMatha, senior, shortstop
Hit .463, scored 35 runs, drove in 32 and stole 20 bases. Played for WCAC champion DeMatha football and basketball teams. Has already reported to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he will play baseball.
Matt Schrader
Blake, senior, third baseman
Hit .534 and slugged 1.000 with seven home runs and 20 RBI. In his career, Schrader set school records for home runs (18), RBI (62), batting average (.490) and slugging percentage (.935). Will play at Potomac State (W.Va.).
Peter Barrett
Wootton, junior, outfielder
Hit .368 with five home runs and 20 RBI. Two of his round trippers came in a win over Gaithersburg. Working primarily in relief, Barrett went 6-0 and saved two games, pitching to a 1.44 ERA.
Harold Brantley
Springbrook, senior, outfielder
Had state record 11 triples and finished career with state record 27. Hit .509 with 27 runs scored and 18 RBI. Also three-year starting quarterback on the football team, will play baseball at Connecticut.
Billy Henig
Good Counsel, junior, outfielder
Falcons leadoff man set table with .422 average, 36 runs, 12 stolen bases, five triples and 20 RBI. In three WCAC Tournament wins, Henig had six hits, including a home run in the title game, and scored eight runs.
Matt Sweeney
Magruder, senior, utility
Lefty hit .600 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI and slugged 1.380. Drew 13 intentional walks. Picked in eighth round of MLB draft by Los Angeles Angels. Currently hitting .359 with three HR in Arizona (rookie) League.
Travis Stewart
Pallotti, senior, pitcher
The 6-foot-5 right-hander went 10-3 with 121 strikeouts in 75 innings, leading Pallotti to a second straight MIAA B title. Hit .424 with seven home runs and 38 RBI. Will play at Northwest Shoals (Ala.) Community College.

The press can help with this situation by doing a little research and helpiong to get the word out about the oppurtunities that have long existed in the District. There are organizations out side of Little League and Ward 2, 3 and 4. Babe Ruth Baseball League has, in recent memory, been a much more competitive league than Little League. There are 12 or more clubs that play in this league from almost every ward in the city. Some of these teams play in both Little League and Babe Ruth League. There are several clubs that have a very rich tradition in baseball, Such as, The Woodridge Warriors, Takoma Rangers, #10 B&G Club and others. Most of these organizations are comunity based and don't have the budgets that NWLL may have, but still produce a great product and create a positive program for the kids.

It's simply amazing how the local press and the so-called baseball experts in the District continue to ignore and refuse to acknowledge the level and quality of baseball being played by the Woodridge Warriors Youth Organization (NE DC). For over 40 years, the program under the leadership of Mason Clark, has fielded baseball teams for youth between the ages of 5 through 16. While this season may not have been one representative of past baseball seasons with our younger teams, we still have a great deal of pride in the efforts of our kids and coaches. Although it wasn't mentioned in the recent Washington Post article, Manny Burris of the San Francisco Giants played for 3 years with the Woodridge Warriors. There have been many former Warriors that have or are currently playing at the high school and college level. All we read about is the baseball that is played west of the park. These type of articles seem more intent on dismissing or trivializing the baseball efforts outside of upper NW

I had previously written to you about the insufferable A's TV play-by-play guy, Glen Kuiper. He rarely focuses upon the game itself, with his constant emphasis upon trivia ranging from uniforms to fans' signs. I suspect that is because he knows so little about the game. When fans don't attend, they usually watch the A's on TV and because of the television delay, can no longer silence Kuiper by turning to Korach on the radio. Kuiper alienates fans with his yawning trivialities and monumental ineptitude. I believe Kuiper's manifest boredom with broadcasting the A's leads to fan boredom and thus contributes to the scant attendance. Get this amateur off the air!

I didn't see any "carrying" done by Lebron. I saw someone who choked and struggled AGAIN when facing REAL competition (like last year against the Spurs). Lebron played HORRIBLY in the Celtics series. Everyone thinks Lebron has carried the Cavs through the playoffs the last several years, when the fact is that all Lebron did was beat the Wizards 2 years in a row without Gilbert Arenas or Caron Butler playing, and the first year they met he made 2 game winners while traveling. If he plays in the west, he wouldn't even sniff the second round of the playoffs.
