Article History Eldersburg, Md. (Map, News) - Eldersburg resident Lindsey Drager had no idea when she got off her train at Chancery Lane that an explosion had taken place.
Drager, now 28, was only two train stops away when four suicide bombers attacked the London Underground transit system one year ago today, killing 56 and wounding hundreds, according to news reports.
“It was scary because we couldn’t see anything different or hear anything different,” said Drager, who was working as a librarian’s assistant at a law library at the time of the attacks.
“We were in shock and could only watch the news Web sites for updates and wait to find out when we could go home.”
The scene was one she said she would never forget.
“I remember looking out at the quiet street,” she said. “I could not believe what was happening out there.”
As much as Americans reacted with shock and disbelief following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, Drager said London residents took a long time to return to normalcy in their daily lives.
She said she did not take the Central tube train for about a month after the attacks.
“I have to admit to watching every person that got on the train or bus with me for quite some time after the attacks,” she said.
Now, one year after the bombings, Drager said she is afraid the United States has forgotten about the tragedy.
“I hope that many Americans will show their support for the British people tomorrow,” she said.
“Just as the British have done for us regarding 9-11, we should send messages of support in any way we can.”
Drager said she plans to commemorate the bombing that hit so close to home with her by participating in the worldwide two-minute moment of silence at 7 a.m. today, or noon London time.
But the lack of talk about the anniversary in the United States is disheartening, she said.
“Other than seeing it on the BBC, nobody’s mentioning it,” she said.
“People just aren’t aware.”
