New fire station set for Potomac Yards

Alexandria (Map, News) - The developers of Potomac Yard, the planned mixed-use development along Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria, have offered to build a new facility for the Alexandria fire department.

Developers Centex and Pulte Homes made the offer as part of an incentives package offered to the city. These packages are typically offered so that the developers can go forward with development while providing some benefit to the community. The developers have also offered to build four stories of affordable housing above the station.

Potomac Yards takes up 167 acres in northern Alexandria. Planned for the site is 1.8 million square feet of office space, 135,000 square feet of retail, 1,973 residential units and a hotel.

Alexandria Fire Department Chief Gary Mesaris told The Examiner the new station is not expected to open before 2008. He said the fire crew from the station on Windsor Avenue is expected to move in to the highly anticipated Potomac Yard facility.

Mesaris added that no city funds are going to be used to build the station. “This is a concept pretty unique to the area,” he said. “This idea of mixing is kind of exciting.”

In addition to the new station at Potomac Yard, the city is exploring improvements to other stations in Alexandria. He said he expects a final report on stations that need upgrades to keep pace with development in the area, including the possibility of a new station on western Eisenhower Avenue.

“One of the strategic things were looking at is the conditions of the stations,” he said. “They’re all quite aged facilities. They don’t really accommodate our needs.”

City council member Paul Smedberg said that the city has not worked with a developer before to build public safety infrastructure.

75,000,000 died during the Black Plague starting with 1354! What percent of this were European Christians? How does this play with America's and West Indian's Christians who were also exterminated because of their Christianity? What dreaded diseases brought them down from San Francisco to Gilroy and who is responsible other than France? If October 31 marks "All Saints Day" in Europe, why do we call Mexico's "Days of the Dead," not "All Saints Day" when it begins on the following day: 1, 2, and 3 November?

This story reveals yet more fear mongering propagated by the media. The real story here is not the possibility of a plague, but the desperation of an Examiner reporter looking to scoop a story. Give me a break.

I would like to know why the police & fire department refused to investigate and take action against the tenants that discarded cigarettes onto my boat cover, on the dry grass area around my stack of firewood. On two occasions I found burned wood laminate strips placed on my deck and dry grass near the boat. But most of all want to know why after 12 or more false calls of burning trash “ and the city knows damn well they were FALSE CALLS as they broke into my home only to find firewood in the EPA woodstove” WHY DID YOU CONTINUE TO HARRASS ME ? AND NOT TAKE ACTION ON THE TENANTS THAT MADE THESE FALSE CALLS OF TRASH BEING BURNED?

Why is this a story? It was $1,200 and the city reviewed and approved. Sounds like someone is trying to make something out of nothing. Shame on you.
