Police are searching for a number of suspects involved in the shooting death of a Hispanic man Monday night on McAllister Street.

The victim, whose identity had not been released by the Medical Examiner’s Office as of Tuesday evening, was approached by several black male teenagers at approximately 10 p.m., said Sgt. Wilfred Williams of the San Francisco Police Department.

The group surrounded the victim, and after a short confrontation, one of the suspects shot the man, Williams said. The group of teens immediately fled on foot from the scene, which occurred just two blocks from City Hall.

The victim, who police said was in his 30s, was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital, but later died there.

Williams said the case is under investigation. He did not know if the suspects knew the victim or if any of them were gang members.

The homicide is the 62nd in 2008, Williams said. In 2007, when The City recorded a decade-high 98 homicides, there were 67 killings at the same time of the year, he said.

The killing was the first in San Francisco since Aug. 5, when Luis Diaz was fatally shot near Glen Park. Robbie Valdespino, 39, is in custody for the murder of Diaz.
